Solinide Photonics raises €4M seed round to commercialize silicon nitride photonic chips for AI data centers

The AMW Read

A seed-stage photonic-interconnect entrant confirms the known AI-data-center optical-power bottleneck trajectory rather than shifting it, with impact confined to the interconnect sub-segment.

Solinide Photonics raises €4M seed round to commercialize silicon nitride photonic chips for AI data centers

Swedish deeptech Solinide Photonics, a spin-out from Chalmers University of Technology, closed a €4 million seed round co-led by Navigare Ventures and PSV Hafnium, with Chalmers Ventures, Turbine Capital, Norrsken Evolve and Almi Greentech Fund also participating. The company builds silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits and microcomb technology that generate dozens of precise light wavelengths from a single chip, replacing the multiple discrete lasers conventional optical interconnects rely on. Solinide says the technology has already demonstrated data-center-grade performance and has been packaged into a rack-mounted system; the new capital funds engineering and commercial hires, in-house prototyping capability, and preparation for manufacturing in Europe.

AI data centers move ever more traffic between GPUs and accelerators as model and cluster sizes grow, and each additional laser-based optical link adds power draw, cost and rack space — a bottleneck now discussed almost as often as compute supply itself. A single chip that multiplexes many wavelengths addresses that bottleneck directly, positioning Solinide alongside better-funded rivals betting on multi-wavelength and co-packaged optics to replace copper and discrete-laser links inside AI clusters. Its academic spin-out origin and stated intent to manufacture in Europe also mark it as part of a broader push to build photonics supply capacity outside the US and Asia incumbents that currently dominate optical components.

For infrastructure buyers, the signal to watch is whether Solinide converts its rack-mounted demonstration into a shipping product and lands a data-center design win, since seed-stage photonics ventures typically need a hyperscaler or systems-integrator partner to reach volume manufacturing. For investors, the round is a small but concrete data point that European deeptech capital is willing to back physical-layer AI infrastructure, a category that has so far been dominated by US-based specialists.
