Cognition eyes $1B raise at $40B valuation, marking a 54% increase in two months.

AI coding agent developer Cognition AI is reportedly in talks to raise $1 billion at a valuation of $40 billion, according to a Tech in Asia report. This would represent a massive jump from its previous valuation of $26B just two months prior, as tracked by the AI Market Watch index (which logs ~5,2k companies, not a full census). The new round comes on the heels of Cognition's acquisition of AI assistant startup Poke for a low nine-figure sum in late July, suggesting that deal has yet to close or close fully.

The rapid valuation inflation — from $26B to $40B in ~7 weeks — signals that the market sees AI coding agents as a winner-take-most vertical. Cognition's Devin, which now integrates the Poke acquisition to add persistent personality, is competing for enterprise developer tooling budgets. If this round closes as reported, it would make Cognition the most well-funded AI coding startup by valuation, further compressing capital in a segment already seeing record ARR ramp rates.

The implied 54% premium in under two months suggests existing or new investors have access to new revenue data or strategic milestones not yet public. For builders, this means the window is closing for late entrants in AI-powered developer tooling. For patent holders and incumbents, it increases pressure to either acquire or partner quickly, or risk losing the platform race entirely.
