Z.ai said Ox Alpha, the previously unidentified model that climbed OpenRouter's usage rankings, is a new entry in its GLM model family. The China-based lab also said it plans to release the model's weights. The model's early uptake was driven by free access, according to the report; no release date, model specifications, or licensing terms were disclosed.
The disclosure converts a stealth-distribution experiment into a clearer open-weight strategy. Free access can rapidly expose a model to developers, but releasing weights is the more consequential move: it enables self-hosting, customization, and downstream deployment beyond a single hosted endpoint.
