Akamai Korea details a core-to-edge AI compute split and layered security approach for enterprise AI workloads.

The AMW Read

An incumbent CDN player extends its known distributed-edge positioning and already-launched security tooling into an explicit core/regional/edge compute framework touching GPU data-center placement, but no new capability, funding, or entrant is introduced.

Akamai Korea details a core-to-edge AI compute split and layered security approach for enterprise AI workloads.

At a September 22 media briefing in Seoul, Akamai Korea CEO Lee Kyung-jun and executives Han Jun-hyung and Kang Sang-jin outlined a distributed architecture that routes AI workloads by type: large-scale training stays in the core cloud, workloads with data-residency or regional-performance needs move to regional cloud, and real-time inference runs at the edge. Akamai is pitching its existing footprint of 4,300+ edge points of presence across 700 cities in 130+ countries, with over 1,000 Tbps of network capacity, as the delivery layer — explicitly separating computation from networking rather than placing GPUs at the edge, so user requests are routed to the nearest edge, forwarded to a GPU data center, and results sent back. The briefing also detailed layered AI security: Workforce Protector for employee AI-use exposure, API Security for RAG and API risk, and Guardicore Segmentation to contain post-intrusion spread, alongside NVIDIA RTX GPU instances currently offered for inference. Domestic references cited were Devsisters and SmartBig. Per the AI Market Watch index (Akamai tracked since 1998, categorized as AI in Cybersecurity; coverage, not a census), Akamai logged 3 pipeline mentions in the past 90 days versus 4 prior — roughly steady coverage, not a breakout event.

The pitch matters because enterprises moving AI from pilot to production are running into inference latency and data-residency limits that pure hyperscaler cloud deployments don't solve well, and Akamai is positioning its legacy CDN network as an inference-routing layer rather than competing head-on as a GPU provider. Folding Workforce Protector — launched in August — into this broader distributed-compute narrative also reflects a wider shift toward managing AI agent identity and permissions as AI use moves from browser Q&A into CLIs, IDEs, and autonomous task execution, expanding what security teams must monitor beyond a single model API.

For builders, the framework argues that low-latency inference doesn't require colocating GPUs at the edge — separating request routing from compute placement is worth evaluating against latency and cost tradeoffs for regional deployments. For investors, this is a network incumbent trying to capture AI-driven traffic growth through its existing edge footprint rather than GPU capex, a materially different bet than neo-cloud GPU providers building out dedicated AI data centers.
