Alibaba's Second-Generation T-Head AI Chip to Tape Out in H2 2026

Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said on August 20 that the company's second-generation T-Head AI chip is expected to tape out and enter production in the second half of 2026, offering stronger computing performance and interconnect bandwidth aimed at large-model training workloads. Alibaba also disclosed that its T-Head unit has built a full-stack chip portfolio spanning GPUs, CPUs, and networking chips, and that a cloud supernode built around the existing Zhenwu M890 chip has already entered scaled sales, with the Zhenwu product line serving more than 650 customers by early August.

The announcement extends Alibaba's push to control more of the AI stack in-house, from chip design through cloud infrastructure to models and applications — a pattern also visible in its recent CosyVoice Studio voice-AI platform launch and planned revenue-sharing deals for large Qwen model users. Coverage of Alibaba in the AI Market Watch index nearly doubled quarter over quarter (96 items vs. 56 in the prior 90 days, per the AI Market Watch index, name-matched over pipeline-ingested sources only), consistent with a company expanding activity across multiple layers of the AI stack at once rather than a single product cycle.

For builders and investors, the signal is that Alibaba is positioning in-house silicon as production infrastructure for training, not just inference, which matters for enterprises evaluating Alibaba Cloud as a compute source amid constrained access to Nvidia hardware for Chinese buyers. A second production-ready generation backed by hundreds of existing Zhenwu customers suggests a repeatable chip-to-cloud pipeline rather than a one-off prototype.
