Apple reportedly trains China-specific LLM with Alibaba, pursuing dual AI strategy
Apple has reportedly trained a custom large language model specifically for the Chinese market, developed in partnership with Alibaba Group, which provided training support. The move marks a strategic shift from Apple’s previous reliance on third-party models for AI features in China, where US models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are unavailable. Reports suggest Apple Intelligence, its AI tool suite, will roll out in China in the coming months, following regulatory filing completion last month. The company has also been exploring integration of Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen (通义千问) model across devices, and recently published then deleted a Chinese-language document about enabling Tongyi Qianwen in Siri and writing tools for Mac users.
This dual-track approach — developing an in-house China-specific model while also integrating a local Chinese model like Tongyi Qianwen — is tailored to navigate China’s stringent AI regulatory environment. If the custom model is approved, Apple could become the first foreign company allowed to offer its own proprietary AI model in China, a significant competitive advantage in a market where local brands like Huawei have already launched AI-powered phones and captured share. The absence of AI features in iPhones sold in China has been cited as a key factor dragging down Apple’s sales in the region, making this a critical move for its market position.
For AI builders and investors, this highlights the increasing localization demands of the Chinese AI market, where global players must adapt to regulatory constraints and partner with local tech giants. Apple’s dual strategy suggests that a one-size-fits-all approach to AI deployment is insufficient, especially in highly regulated markets. This could pressure other global AI companies to invest in region-specific models or partnerships, affecting the competitive dynamics of the AI industry in China and beyond. Per the AI Market Watch index, Apple has generated 44 news items in the last 90 days, a notable uptick from 30 in the prior period, reflecting heightened interest in its AI moves (coverage limited to name-matched pipeline sources).
