Atomo, a functional materials startup, has secured seed investment from LG Electronics and deep-tech accelerator Bluepoint Partners. The investment amount and company valuation were not disclosed. Atomo was spun off from STUDIO341, an in-house venture program jointly operated by LG Electronics and Bluepoint, which has been running since 2023 to discover and nurture internal ventures until they spin out. Atomo's first product is an ultra-thin thermal barrier coating designed to control battery fire risk. The coating, less than 100 micrometers thick, blocks flames and, unlike existing coatings, does not expand in volume when exposed to heat, improving space efficiency within battery systems. The company plans to conduct proof-of-concept (PoC) demonstrations in the second half of this year to validate the technology, then expand into passive cooling tapes and other products for IT and electronics applications where heat generation is a major issue.
This investment is notable within the AI industry context because Atomo is leveraging a 'materials fabless' model—analogous to semiconductor fabless companies—to reduce the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and long lead times traditionally required for material startups to build factories and production lines. By designing materials in-house but partnering with specialists for validation and commercialization, Atomo aims to accelerate market entry for functional materials.
