ByteDance's Doubao Work Adds Local Office Editing, Browser Recording and Cross-Device Handoff

ByteDance's AI work-agent product Doubao Work (豆包工作) rolled out three new capabilities on September 11. A local Office editing tool lets users right-click PowerPoint and Excel files (Word support is coming later) to have the Doubao agent edit them directly, with AI-generated or AI-modified changes syncing between the local file and the cloud copy. A browser recording-and-playback feature watches a user perform a task once inside the Doubao browser — clicks, form fills, image uploads — then converts it into a reusable "Skill" complete with trigger conditions, required inputs and a result-verification method; ByteDance cites a product-listing workflow as the example use case. A third feature lets a running task switch freely between a local PC and a cloud PC, or hand work off across multiple logged-in devices, without losing conversation context mid-task.

The update pushes Doubao Work beyond one-shot content generation toward a computer-use agent that operates existing office software and browser workflows the way an employee would, building on capabilities the product launched with on August 25 — phone remote control, cloud PCs, Windows and Mac virtual desktops, and multi-agent parallel execution. Turning a single demonstrated browser action into a persisted, reusable Skill is the more consequential piece: it moves toward agents that accumulate procedural memory of a company's actual workflows rather than depending on fresh prompting each time, and it puts ByteDance's existing consumer and enterprise distribution behind a computer-use agent category that other labs are also racing to productize.

For builders, the Skill-recording approach is worth tracking as a lower-friction alternative to manual RPA scripting for repetitive back-office tasks like listing updates or form processing. For investors, bundling these capabilities into one branded product rather than shipping separate point tools signals ByteDance intends to compete directly for China's enterprise office-automation budget, raising the bar for standalone agent startups targeting the same workflows without comparable distribution.
