Doubao launches consumer mobile AI assistant with SAEP on Nubia NaviX Ultra
ByteDance's Doubao released the consumer version of its mobile AI assistant on September 14, adding screen-based assistance and local data search. The software introduces the Screen Automation Execution Protocol, or SAEP, allowing third-party apps to specify whether AI-driven actions are permitted. The assistant debuts on the Nubia NaviX Ultra, which goes on sale September 16.
The move extends Doubao's June Professional Edition push into workplace productivity by opening a consumer, device-native surface rather than a workplace-only tier. Per the AI Market Watch index, Doubao is tracked as a Foundation Models / LLMs company founded in 2023, within an index that covers roughly 5,000 firms rather than a full census. Shipping first on a single OEM flagship is a distribution bet: users arrive through the phone's sales channel, and SAEP frames agentic screen control as something apps must explicitly allow.
For builders and investors, the concrete signal is the permission boundary between an on-device assistant and third-party software. If OEMs and app vendors adopt similar allowlists, consumer AI assistants can move from chat wrappers toward supervised UI agents on partner devices; if adoption stays narrow, Doubao's automation remains gated to cooperative apps and the NaviX Ultra launch window.
