OpenAI adds virtual clothing try-on to ChatGPT's shopping interface

ChatGPT users can now select clothing images or listings shown in the chatbot, tap “Try on,” and upload photos of themselves to generate a visualization of the apparel. The Verge reports that the feature resembles an AI try-on tool Google introduced more than a year earlier. The report also flags a limitation in OpenAI's example: the generated image changed the subject's hair color and styling along with her clothing, raising questions about how faithfully the visualization preserves the uploaded photo.

For the AI market, this is an incremental expansion of a foundation-model company's consumer interface into a specialized visual shopping workflow. The competitive question is how effectively a general-purpose chatbot can deliver a task already offered by another major AI provider. Putting clothing visualization alongside listings gives users another reason to stay within the conversation while evaluating a purchase. However, the example's unrelated appearance changes illustrate the gap between producing a plausible image and providing a dependable product preview; visual appeal alone does not establish garment fit or rendering accuracy.

Builders developing AI shopping tools should evaluate whether generated previews preserve the shopper's appearance and represent the selected item consistently. Investors should treat this launch as evidence of product breadth, while looking for evidence that the feature improves purchasing decisions. The report provides no usage, conversion, or accuracy results, so it supports a distribution argument more strongly than a claim of proven commercial value.
