Citi is rolling out an internal AI platform that enables employees to create and deploy AI agents using top foundation models within a secure, bank-controlled environment. The move marks the bank’s formal entry into agentic AI, targeting scalable automation for internal workflows such as compliance checks, document processing, and data reconciliation. The platform taps models from multiple providers, emphasizing safety and data governance.
This fits the recurring hyperscaler-distribution pattern, but here the distributor is a global bank rather than a cloud provider: Citi is effectively building an internal model marketplace with agentic tooling, turning its workforce into both users and builders. It also updates the open debate about whether enterprise AI adoption will be led by point solutions or internally governed platforms — Citi is betting on the latter, prioritizing security and control over speed-to-deployment from external vendors.
For the AI market, the signal is that large regulated enterprises are now comfortable enough with foundation-model reliability to hand agent creation to non-technical employees.
