Cohere Acquires Reliant AI Weeks After Aleph Alpha Merger, Doubles Down on Sovereign Pharma AI
Canadian foundation model company Cohere has acquired Reliant AI, a Berlin- and Montreal-based startup specializing in AI-powered research platforms for the biopharmaceutical industry. The acquisition comes just weeks after Cohere’s merger with German sovereign-AI leader Aleph Alpha. Reliant AI was founded in 2023 by researchers with backgrounds at Google and DeepMind, and had raised an $11.3 million seed round led by iNovia Ventures and Tola Capital. Cohere will integrate the technology into a new product called “North for Pharma,” an agentic AI system for R&D, clinical development, and scientific analytics. Reliant AI co-founder Karl Moritz Hermann will join Cohere as VP of AI Verticalizations in Berlin, while Marc Bellemare will serve as VP of Modelling in Montreal. The deal also brings existing pharma customers including GSK, Medicus Pharma, and Kyowa Kirin.
This is the second European acquisition for Cohere in a matter of weeks, following the Aleph Alpha merger. The pattern signals a deliberate strategy to build a vertically specialized, sovereign-AI product stack targeting highly regulated industries — first financial services and telecom, now biopharma. The “acqui-licensing” pattern is at work: Cohere is absorbing both talent and customer relationships to accelerate its go-to-market in verticals where data sovereignty and regulatory compliance are non-negotiable. For the foundation-model substrate, this acquisition updates the competitive dynamics in segment 06 (Healthcare/Bio), where enterprise AI adoption in pharma has historically been slow due to data-privacy concerns. Cohere’s bet is that sovereign deployment — where models run on customer-controlled infrastructure — removes that friction.
Reliant AI’s domain expertise in automating systematic literature reviews and extracting unstructured regulatory data directly addresses a pain point that hyperscaler-distribution models struggle to serve: bespoke, compliance-first workflows. Cohere is effectively building a moat by combining its enterprise-optimized Command models with vertical-specific agentic tooling, rather than competing on general-purpose chatbot benchmarks. The early customer pipeline (GSK et al.) validates demand, but integration complexity and the need to maintain Aleph Alpha’s European credibility will test execution. The open question — is sovereign AI a durable differentiator or a regulatory workaround? — remains unresolved, but Cohere is placing a firm bet on the former.
