ByteDance has updated Doubao's task-oriented interface with a side workspace that keeps a conversation and its working materials on the same screen. The multi-tab panel can open local files, Feishu documents, web pages, code, applications, and a terminal. Outputs generated during a longer task, including files, images, and applications, remain available as tabs, while each conversation retains its own workspace state when users switch tasks.
The update matters because it shifts the product from a chat-only assistant toward a persistent task environment, where the model's responses, tools, and artifacts remain connected. In development work, Doubao can preview generated code and let users edit a specific part of a generated web page without recreating the whole result. In office workflows, it can open Feishu documents, presentations, and spreadsheets, then update generated content directly in those files. The product can also browse and operate websites to search, click, paginate, extract information, and summarize results.
For builders, the relevant test is whether a shared workspace reduces the handoff friction between a model's plan and a user's actual work: editing an artifact, checking a source page, or continuing a task later. For investors, the feature underlines how AI assistants are competing on task continuity and tool access, not just response quality; the durable differentiator will be whether those connected workflows are reliable enough to become part of daily work rather than an alternate chat interface.
