Fortinet, the cybersecurity vendor, acquired Virtue AI on August 17. Virtue AI is an AI-security startup founded in 2024 that builds guardrails and red-teaming tools aimed at defending autonomous AI agents from attack, and Fortinet says the deal is meant to strengthen its own defenses in that area. The acquisition comes two months after Meta hired away Virtue AI's founders, leaving the startup's remaining team and intellectual property to be absorbed by Fortinet instead. Per the AI Market Watch index, Virtue AI had raised $30 million in total funding β though the index tracks roughly 5,000 companies and is a coverage sample, not a census.
The sequence is notable less for the dollar figures involved than for its shape: a founder-level acquihire by a hyperscaler followed, two months later, by a separate sale of the leftover company to an unrelated buyer. Meta's June move secured the people; Fortinet's August purchase picked up whatever product, codebase, and staff remained, folding them into its security portfolio to address a real gap β as enterprises give autonomous agents real tool-calling permissions, defending those agents becomes a distinct problem from conventional endpoint or network security.
For AI-security founders, this is a cautionary data point: differentiated safety tooling can produce two separate exits rather than one clean acquisition, with the talent and the assets going to different buyers. For incumbents like Fortinet, buying the remaining IP and staff is a faster route to a credible agent-security offering than building one internally, particularly once the category's most visible researchers have already been absorbed elsewhere.
