Google tests Gemini and AI Mode checkout links with Flipkart in India

Google has begun testing a shopping feature that lets some users move from select Flipkart product listings in Gemini and AI Mode into a Flipkart-branded checkout flow. The limited pilot covers categories including smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories, while other users continue to see standard listings without a direct purchase option. Google said it regularly tests features that help people discover and connect with businesses; a broader rollout is reportedly planned for October, ahead of India’s festive shopping season.

The test moves Google’s AI surfaces closer to the transaction layer, not merely product discovery. It follows Google’s earlier work on the Universal Commerce Protocol, intended to help AI agents interact with retailers through a shopping journey. The Flipkart implementation appears distinct from Google’s demonstrated hosted checkout: tapping Buy opens Flipkart’s own branded flow. That distinction matters because it preserves the merchant’s checkout surface while making Gemini and AI Mode a higher-intent distribution channel. Flipkart’s partnership also carries strategic weight: Google invested about $350 million for a minority stake in Flipkart in 2024, while Amazon listings shown alongside Flipkart products did not offer the same direct-purchase option.

For builders, the near-term lesson is that AI-commerce integration may be won through retailer-controlled checkout, catalog quality, and transaction handoffs rather than a single universal agent checkout. For investors, India’s festive season offers an early test of whether AI shopping interfaces can convert recommendation traffic into completed commerce without disintermediating retailers. The pilot also extends Google’s recent Gemini agent work into another consumer workflow, from task coordination toward purchase execution.
