The launch incrementally expands Sarvam's consumer distribution through an existing HMD relationship, with limited demonstrated impact because Indus is nonexclusive and no usage or revenue results are reported.
HMD launches Vibe 2 Pro 5G in India with Sarvam's Indus AI assistant
HMD has launched the Vibe 2 Pro 5G in India at INR 15,999, with a launch offer of INR 14,999. According to Memeburn, sales begin October 8 on Flipkart during Big Billion Days. The Android 16 phone includes Indus, the AI assistant from Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI, which supports more than 22 Indian languages. Hardware includes a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor, a 6.78-inch 120Hz display and a 6,000mAh battery. HMD promises two years of security updates and no Android version upgrades.
The AI-market development is Sarvam gaining another consumer distribution surface for its language models. Indus launched in February across Android, iOS and the web, running on Sarvam's 105-billion-parameter model; HMD had already partnered with Sarvam on feature phones. Preinstalling the assistant on a budget smartphone puts Indian-language access into the device purchase itself. That gives a domestic model provider a route to users alongside global chatbot services, although the article supplies no adoption figures or comparative language evaluations. The integration expands availability without establishing exclusive access: Indus is also a free app available on other phones.
For builders and investors, the concrete question is whether preinstallation produces sustained usage beyond what the standalone app already attracts. Language coverage and easier access provide a clear proposition, but this launch offers no evidence of retention, revenue or a proprietary distribution advantage. Assessing the partnership therefore requires separating placement on the device from demonstrated demand for the assistant. Buyers can obtain Indus elsewhere, while the phone's limited software-support commitment remains part of the overall purchase decision.
