Sarvam AI adds IndiGo Ventures to its Series B round, deepening airline AI partnership
IndiGo Ventures, the corporate venture arm of Indian carrier IndiGo, has invested in Sarvam AI as part of the startup's ongoing Series B round, extending a commercial partnership already deploying Sarvam's voice and agentic AI systems across IndiGo's passenger experience, employee support and operational workflows. Sarvam disclosed a $234 million first close of the Series B in June at a $1.5 billion post-money valuation, with HCLTech and Bessemer Venture Partners joining existing investors Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners — a sharp jump from the $41 million Series A that Lightspeed led in December 2023. Per the AI Market Watch index, which tracks coverage rather than a census, Sarvam AI's total funding stands at $350.3 million. Founded in 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam builds models spanning text, speech, computer vision and document processing, alongside its own model-training and -serving infrastructure.
The deal is notable less for the check size, which wasn't disclosed, than for the shape of the capital: a corporate strategic investor tying funding directly to a live production deployment rather than a purely financial bet. That fits the broader pattern this outlet has tracked around Sarvam — HCLTech leading the round as an IT-services hedge against generative AI disruption, and Sarvam Code undercutting Claude Code and OpenAI Codex on price for India-hosted coding agents. IndiGo Ventures framing aviation as ideal for enterprise AI, given millions of time-sensitive customer interactions, gives a sovereign-AI lab like Sarvam a reference deployment that's harder to dismiss than a benchmark score.
For enterprise AI builders, the signal is that Indian sovereign-AI vendors are winning production mandates from domestic conglomerates on local cost and data-residency grounds, not just price. For investors, an ongoing Series B absorbing a new strategic backer months after its first close suggests continued capital availability for Sarvam without a fresh headline valuation — worth watching for whether other Indian corporates follow IndiGo's model of investing alongside a live deployment.
