The $750 million round, $15.75 billion valuation and reported Sandboxes revenue meaningfully update Modal's position in AI infrastructure without resolving the sector's durability or margin debates.
Modal raises $750 million to expand its AI infrastructure platform
Modal has raised $750 million in Series D funding at a $15.75 billion post-money valuation, according to PingWest's report citing the company. Accel led the round, with Kleiner Perkins participating alongside existing investors including Menlo Ventures and General Catalyst. Modal provides compute and runtime environments for generative AI applications, serving customers including DoorDash, Cognition, Ramp and Runway across workloads such as video generation, robotics training and drug discovery.
The financing puts a substantial capital commitment behind the execution layer beneath AI applications. Modal reports that its Sandboxes product, introduced in 2023, has reached $300 million in annualized revenue and nearly 3 billion cumulative sandbox launches, with support for million-scale concurrency. These figures make application execution an important part of the infrastructure investment story alongside model training and inference. They establish reported commercial scale, but do not establish profitability or show how much revenue comes from durable customer commitments versus variable usage.
For builders, the concrete development is Modal's broader infrastructure offering: the company recently introduced multi-node training, Modal servers and virtual machines, and says it will continue expanding reinforcement-learning and model-inference products. Buyers should evaluate those capabilities against their own workload requirements. For investors, the central diligence question is whether sandbox usage supports durable revenue and attractive margins at a $15.75 billion valuation; cumulative launches alone cannot answer it.
