Natural raises $30M Series A to build payment rails for autonomous AI agents, challenging Stripe
Natural, a payments infrastructure startup founded in 2025 by former Ivella co-founders Kahlil Lalji and Eric Wang alongside ex-Nextdoor engineer Walt Leung, has raised a $30 million Series A led by Forerunner Ventures, bringing total funding to $40 million. The company is building an agent orchestration layer that enables AI agents to autonomously move and store funds — making payments, collecting funds, and transacting with humans or other agents without human intervention. Natural is currently in beta and plans to support both traditional bank payments and USD-backed stablecoins.
Why it matters: This startup is targeting a structural gap in the AI agent stack — the financial rails that underpin autonomous commerce. Today's payment infrastructure (credit cards, ACH) was designed for human-initiated, authorized transactions, creating a bottleneck for agents that operate at computer speed. Natural's bet is that the volume of agent-to-agent and agent-to-human payments will be two to four orders of magnitude larger than today's payment volume, forcing a complete redesign of the financial backbone. This fits the hyperscaler-distribution pattern: just as Stripe became the default payment layer for internet commerce, a new entrant could capture the default position for agentic commerce if it can outpace incumbents on speed and architectural decisions.
Industry watchers should note that Natural is entering a fast-emerging subsegment alongside DCVC-backed Skyfire Systems, signaling that the race to own agent payment infrastructure is heating up. The company has attracted senior talent from Stripe, Ramp, and Square, suggesting that fintech veterans see this as a generational platform shift. The risk for Natural is that Stripe itself is racing to adapt its own rails for AI agents, and the established distribution moat of incumbents could prove difficult to overcome. If Natural succeeds, it would validate the thesis that agentic commerce requires entirely new infrastructure — not just API wrappers on existing systems.
