OpenAI has released GPT-5.5 Instant, which immediately becomes the default model for ChatGPT, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant. The new model maintains low-latency inference while claiming a 50% reduction in hallucination rates in sensitive domains such as law, medicine, and finance. On the AIME 2025 math benchmark, GPT-5.5 Instant scored 81.2 versus the prior version's 65.4, and it also improved on the MMMU-Pro multimodal reasoning test. The model now supports search-tool invocation to draw on past conversations, uploaded files, and Gmail for personalized responses — initially available to web-based Plus and Pro users. A new “memory source” display lets users see the evidence behind answers and correct or delete outdated information; shared chat histories will not expose those sources to recipients.
