Origin Lab Announces $8M to Turn Video Game Assets into AI World Model Training Data

Origin Lab, a startup building a licensed data marketplace connecting video game studios with AI labs developing world models, has raised $8 million in seed funding led by Lightspeed Ventures, with participation from SV Angel, Eniac, Seven Stars, and FPV. Angel investors include Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin and Cruise founder Kyle Vogt. The company was co-founded by Anne-Margot Rodde, Antoine Gargot, and Colin Carrier. Origin Lab converts game assets into training data for world models, targeting a key bottleneck: the scarcity of high-quality physical-world data for AI systems that understand object movement and interaction in real space. It already counts Yann LeCun's AMI Labs and Fei-Fei Li's World Labs as customers.

Why it matters: Origin Lab exemplifies the emerging pattern of vertical data intermediaries that bridge domain-specific data owners with AI labs facing training-data scarcity. As world models grow in importance for robotics, autonomous driving, and physical AI, the demand for licensed, physically grounded training data mirrors the earlier wave that produced Scale AI for perception data. The involvement of prominent AI researchers as customers signals that even frontier labs remain data-constrained. The seed round size is modest, but the hypothesis — that gaming assets offer a scalable, legal data source — updates the data-infrastructure substrate for segment 05, where data marketplaces are a recurring theme.

Expert take: Origin Lab's positioning as a neutral, licensed intermediary between game studios and labs is strategically distinct from the more common web-scraping or synthetic-data approaches. The challenge will be proving that game-simulated physics transfers robustly to real-world world models, and that licensing terms can scale across thousands of titles. Lightspeed's backing suggests conviction that gaming's simulation fidelity is now high enough to be economically viable for training. If successful, this could create a new asset class for game publishers and a data moat for early-partnering labs.
