Replit CEO says Anthropic relationship has ended; account faces pushback
Replit CEO Amjad Masad said at TechCrunch Disrupt that the coding platform is no longer working with Anthropic, citing cost, performance and partnership considerations. Replit announced an OpenAI partnership in August. Masad said internal evaluations and a public benchmark favored Sol and Astra for building applications from scratch. However, an unnamed person familiar with the Anthropic relationship told TechCrunch the partnership remained in place. September product materials also described Claude models running in Replit Agent's production environment. The report therefore leaves the timing and scope of any separation unresolved.
The dispute highlights a central tension in AI coding: application platforms depend on model suppliers while competing through the development environment and workflows wrapped around those models. Masad's explanation suggests Replit evaluates suppliers across commercial terms and application-level performance, rather than model capability alone. His benchmark claims remain attributed claims, not independently established results in this report. He also said enterprise contracts account for roughly 15% of revenue this year, versus 2% last year, while B2B contributes more than half, making supplier decisions increasingly relevant to business customers.
For builders and investors, the concrete diligence question is which models actually serve production workloads and how a supplier change affects cost, reliability and customer commitments. Partnership announcements alone do not establish that operating picture. Masad emphasized orchestration, error recovery, sandboxing and authorization as requirements for safe agents; those controls remain consequential whichever model supplier Replit uses.
