Anthropic Opens Claude Duet Research Preview for Background Business Tasks
Anthropic has introduced Claude Duet, a proactive agent app for professionals and small businesses, in a research preview for Pro and Max customers through a waitlist. Available on iOS, Android and Claude.ai, Duet runs tasks in its own virtual machine, builds daily briefings and dashboards, and recommends actions based on users' data. Anthropic says it uses Claude Opus 5.5 and connects to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins in the Claude Marketplace.
The launch puts Anthropic into direct competition for the business-agent interface, where value depends on completing ongoing work across connected tools. Background execution and proactive recommendations extend the product beyond answering prompts, while Claude subscriptions and marketplace connections provide distribution. The competitive question is whether those connections translate into dependable task completion. Research-preview access does not yet establish production reliability or customer returns, and Duet cannot show users its browser activity as it happens.
For builders, Duet makes approval design a concrete product requirement: purchases through Stripe's Link or Shopify's Shop Pay require user approval, while securities trading and transfers between accounts are excluded. Anthropic also says a message classifier checks for sensitive-information leakage and that Duet defaults to rejecting requests for credit card numbers and government identification. Investors should assess whether these controls preserve useful automation without creating excessive oversight work; connector breadth alone cannot establish a durable advantage.
