Notion connects mid-task model routing with differentiated credit allowances, meaningfully updating agent pricing and orchestration while leaving customer savings unverified.
Notion ties task-based AI model routing to a new credit system
Notion's Auto routes tasks across multiple AI providers, balancing quality, speed, and cost within workspace model restrictions. Enabled by default in Notion Agent chat and Custom Agent settings, it can switch to a more capable model for demanding steps, then switch back for simpler work. Users can also select a model manually. A new credit system applies to new Business and Enterprise workspaces from October 19, 2026, and existing workspaces from November 2: Notion Agent uses Standard credits with Auto and Select credits with manual selection.
The market significance is the link between agent orchestration and pricing: Notion makes model selection part of the workflow while distinguishing automatic routing from explicit model choice in its credit system. This puts the application provider in charge of balancing capability and expense across everyday knowledge work. Notion reports that Auto's average running cost was 87% lower than Opus 5.5 in its tests, with results comparable to frontier models even on tasks that typically consume more credits. Those are vendor-reported findings from simulated Notion tasks judged through model comparisons, rather than independent evidence of customer savings.
For builders, the concrete implication is that routing quality and billing clarity need to develop together. Notion lets users override Auto and administrators restrict available models, but warns that disabling too many models can reduce routing efficiency. Buyers evaluating the feature should compare credit consumption and output quality on their own workflows: the published estimates range from five Auto credits for simple tasks to 25 for complex work, and actual use can vary with context.
