NVIDIA's explicit $3.5B convertible-bond stake in MediaTek pairs mega-scale capital with NVLink Fusion custom-XPU licensing and consumer/automotive silicon integration, extending NVIDIA's compute-lock-in strategy across three hardware surfaces at once.
NVIDIA to Invest $3.5 Billion in MediaTek in Expanded AI Chip Partnership
NVIDIA announced it will invest $3.5 billion by subscribing to convertible bonds issued by MediaTek (联发科), deepening cooperation across AI infrastructure, on-device AI computing, and automotive silicon. MediaTek will adopt NVIDIA's NVLink Fusion platform to give hyperscale cloud providers and frontier model developers a pre-validated path for custom XPU development that plugs directly into NVIDIA's rack-scale AI factory systems. The companies will also continue multi-generation collaboration on NVIDIA RTX Spark and DGX Spark PC chips, integrating NVIDIA GPUs with MediaTek SoCs for consumer PCs and workstations, while MediaTek's Dimensity Auto platform will deeply integrate NVIDIA technology to support smart-cockpit and DRIVE AGX autonomous-driving systems. NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said the two companies are building a shared platform to bring accelerated computing into new markets.
The deal shows NVIDIA using direct capital, not just licensing, to secure a major Asian chipmaker as an NVLink Fusion partner — giving hyperscalers and model developers a custom-silicon route that still terminates inside NVIDIA's rack-scale architecture rather than a fully independent ASIC stack. It also extends NVIDIA's footprint beyond data-center GPUs into consumer PC silicon through RTX Spark and DGX Spark, and into automotive compute through DRIVE AGX, tying MediaTek's SoC manufacturing scale to NVIDIA's platform across three separate hardware markets at once.
For builders and investors tracking chip supply chains, this raises the bar for standalone custom-silicon efforts competing with NVLink Fusion-anchored designs, and gives MediaTek funded runway to compete more directly against Qualcomm in on-device AI PC chips and automotive AI silicon. Enterprises evaluating custom XPU paths for AI factories now have a pre-validated MediaTek option inside the NVIDIA ecosystem rather than a ground-up independent design.
