Peebles departed OpenAI after the company pivoted away from the Sora team he led. The venture, still unnamed, intends to train its own video-generation models and court filmmakers once it secures sufficient funding.
Peebles' departure signals continued turnover inside OpenAI's video group even as Sora remains one of the most visible products in the generative-video race alongside Runway, Pika, and Google's Veo. Pairing a technical lead with direct Sora experience and Katzenberg's decades of Hollywood distribution relationships points to a startup aiming to compete less on raw model benchmarks and more on winning filmmaker and studio buy-in — historically the harder problem for video-generation labs that have mostly sold to consumers and marketers rather than professional production houses.
