Acquisition updates the coding-tools player map with a new top-tier entrant (SpaceX), and the $60B price qualifies as a capital-cycle event.
SpaceX is set to acquire Anysphere, the maker of the AI coding tool Cursor, for $60 billion, a deal that will see the Cursor brand phased out in favor of Grok, according to The Information. Employees were told in an all-hands meeting that the acquisition could close by next weekend and that the Cursor name would gradually disappear from new products within months, starting with the release of a next-generation general agent code-named "Sand" as "Grok Bot." Anysphere will not remain independent but will be distributed among existing SpaceX AI teams and folded into SpaceX's internal systems shortly after the deal closes.
Internal pushback has emerged over the decision to retire the Cursor brand, which holds strong developer-market value, in favor of Grok, which has weaker B2B positioning. CEO Michael Truell had previously stated that SpaceX valued the Cursor brand and enterprise customer relationships as precious assets, fueling a sense of betrayal among staff. In response, a SpaceX representative said the final branding decision could still change, with the possibility of a new third-party brand instead of Grok also under review.
For AI developers and investors, the deal signals that distribution is becoming the dominant force in AI coding tools, with brand equity often secondary to the parent company's strategic priorities. The phased removal of the Cursor brand may unsettle enterprise customers who chose the tool for its established reputation, potentially opening a window for competitors like GitHub Copilot. Observers will be watching closely to see whether SpaceX can preserve Cursor's developer loyalty while repositioning its products under the Grok name, and whether antitrust constraints limit how tightly the companies can integrate before the transaction is finalized. #SpaceX #Anysphere #Cursor #Grok #AIcoding #MergersAndAcquisitions
