Upstage (업스테이지), FuriosaAI (퓨리오사AI), and AXZ have jointly commercialized what they call Korea's first full-stack sovereign AI stack, combining domestic hardware, software, and service. The stack integrates Upstage's Solar LLM, FuriosaAI's Renegade NPU, and AXZ's Daum portal AI summary service, which provides real-time search summaries with citations. The partners report inference cost reductions of over 50% compared to NVIDIA H200 GPUs, achieving comparable performance through optimized compiler and serving engine design. Daum's AI summary currently handles 20% of total queries, processing 500 million tokens daily across three nodes, with plans to expand.
This launch represents a significant milestone for Korea's AI sovereignty efforts. By assembling a complete domestic stack—NPU, model, and consumer-facing service—the partnership directly addresses concerns over supply chain security and reliance on foreign chips. FuriosaAI CEO Baek Jun-ho emphasized that domestic NPUs offer superior price-performance and power efficiency, and committed to supplying 10,000 NPU units to Upstage by year-end. The move validates the viability of alternative AI hardware ecosystems outside the NVIDIA-dominated paradigm, particularly for inference workloads in national portals and enterprise applications.
The collaboration also updates the competitive landscape for foundation model companies. Upstage, which had previously focused on open-weight models and enterprise APIs, now has a captive deployment channel through AXZ's Daum portal—one of Korea's largest web properties. This mirrors the hyperscaler-distribution pattern seen with OpenAI's Microsoft partnership or Anthropic's Google deal, but with a distinctly sovereign flavor using domestic chips. As global AI regulation and export controls tighten, the Korean full-stack model could serve as a blueprint for other nations seeking technological independence.
