Nvidia is investing $3.5 billion in Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek, giving MediaTek access to Nvidia's NVLink Fusion ecosystem so it can design custom AI chips for cloud providers and AI labs that plug directly into Nvidia-based data centers. Nvidia senior director Dion Harris said "Nvidia is an AI infrastructure company" that "expanded beyond pure computing chips years ago." MediaTek's custom data-center ASIC business is expected to generate $2 billion in 2026 revenue, and the two companies will keep collaborating on DGX Spark and RTX Spark desktop AI hardware and on automotive platforms built around Nvidia Drive AGX.
As Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic build their own AI chips to reduce Nvidia dependence, Nvidia is choosing to fund and standardize around that shift rather than resist it. The MediaTek deal extends a pattern visible in Nvidia's own recent moves: last week's AWS partnership added 2 million more GPUs and NVLink Fusion integration, and the Vera Rubin architecture reframed Nvidia's moat around system-level data orchestration rather than raw GPU count. Wiring NVLink Fusion into MediaTek's custom ASIC line means a hyperscaler or AI lab that designs its own chip to escape Nvidia's GPU pricing still runs that chip inside Nvidia's rack-scale stack.
For builders and investors, the practical read is that "custom silicon independence" from Nvidia is increasingly custom silicon interoperable with Nvidia — choosing a MediaTek-designed chip still buys into Nvidia's scale-up/scale-out ecosystem, which caps how much pricing leverage the custom-chip trend actually transfers away from Nvidia in the near term.
