Stripe Treasury for agents lets ChatGPT, Claude and other AI agents move startup money behind human approval gates

Stripe has launched Stripe Treasury for agents. The product extends Stripe Treasury, its embedded banking service, so that AI agents such as ChatGPT and Claude can act on a company's account. At launch, agents can check balances, pay invoices, move funds between accounts and convert currencies. They connect through Stripe's model context protocol (MCP) server. Founders choose which accounts and data an agent can see, whether it can only read or can also take action, and the point at which any money movement needs human approval. Stripe says spending limits will arrive in the coming weeks, and card creation is planned.

With this launch, agents in finance go from reading and reporting to moving money in real bank accounts, so the permission controls become the core of the product. Stripe ties the launch to its own research. It says more than twice as many solopreneurs earned over $1 million in 2025 as in 2023, and that 63% of C corporations formed through Stripe Atlas in Q2 2026 had solo founders. The launch also builds on Stripe's reported $7B+ acquisition of OpenRouter in August. Stripe now sits both where agents buy model access and where they spend company cash.

For teams building finance agents and AI back-office tools, the main implication is that the account provider may end up owning the controls: access scopes, approval thresholds and spending limits set at the bank, not inside the agent. Vendors selling standalone guardrails for agent payments should expect that layer to be bundled. The one customer example, Kubrio, keeps a human check in place: its sole employee plans to let his Grok-based agent pay contractors, but he will still approve every payment himself.
